Measure Body Dressmaking, Beginners Guide

When learning dressmaking, you only need to know three key body measurements. Additionally, it’s helpful to measure from the waist down to determine the length for a skirt hem or trouser leg.

Where to Measure Body Sewing

  • Chest – The widest part of the chest and bust.
  • Hips – The widest part of the lower body, around hips and bottom.
  • Waist – The thinnest part of the lower body, just below the rib cage.

How to Measure Yourself

To measure the areas below, use a tape measure that is neither too tight nor too loose; it should fit like fitted clothing.

As you become more advanced in dressmaking and tailoring, it can be beneficial to measure additional areas of the body for a more accurate garment fit. However, this will require adjusting the dressmaking pattern to size, which can become quite complicated.
